Tsunami

So I was terrified today as I heard about the Tsunami warning issued to the entire south pacific :S I can’t believe how huge that Chilean earthquake was… Those poor people 😦

I was working all day today and couldn’t contact my Mum coz she was camping out in the middle of nowhere with no cellphone reception. They weren’t even aware anything had happened!

It was hard to remain happy and focused today because I was worried the entire time, I had this big knot of fear and concern in my stomach until about 1pm. I finally started to relax when they stopped mentioning it over the radio and that nothing had so far happened. Also it was relaxing to see all the customers who were unfazed by it, that helped me calm down.

Street Fiesta + New scooter!!!!

I bought a scooter today!!! It’s so cute, seriously. Check it out:

I love it! πŸ˜€ I’ve been driving it round today and really getting used to it. It’s going to be so nice to be able to drive to work instead of cycle. It won’t be so frantic and I won’t be so exhausted at the end of the day.

Anyway, today I went to the Street/Tuna Fiesta with Emma.

We came into town at around 2pm because Emma wanted to buy a skirt before we went to check out the music. She didn’t end up finding anything she liked, so we headed over to check out the festivities. Nothing interesting really happened until it was time for A New Era to go on stage.

It was so cute, since the music was up so loud, Emma and I saw this little girl with her fingers in her ears. It was adorable!

Emma and I had some fun during the performance. Photo within a photo….

We’d promised Dal we’d take lots of photos of him. Β I stayed true to my promise πŸ™‚

At the end I wound up holding his guitar coz he was stuffed and I wanted to help ease the load.
I had a great time lol, but ended up being a bit of a danger to passers by…

We met up with Dallas in the Craic shortly after to give him back his guitar. We had some fun…

After that we hurried off to catch Attic Skies. They’re another local band, and omg they are GOOOD! They were my favourite act of the day. They were entertaining and refreshing and there were just some kick ass vibes goin’ on with these guys that radiated to the audience.

I thoroughly enjoyed watching these guy perform πŸ™‚

Anyway, we hung around a bit after their act, we listened to a little bit of another band but by then it was 7pm and I really wanted to get home before it started getting dark. I ended up driving with my sun in my eyes anyway… but oh well.

A great day has been had by all I’d say! If anyone from A New Era or Attic Skies want extra band photos, just leave me a comment. I have TONS!

I have work tomorrow and it’s a long shift… I’ll see you after! Goodnight πŸ™‚

Pumpkin & Kumara Hummus

Morning everybody!
I have such a busy day ahead, but Β it should be loads of fun πŸ™‚

When I woke up at 7am this morning, I opened my curtains then just lay there for about 10 minutes with my cat, breathing in the fresh morning air. I love it so much. It was so relaxing and soothing and a great way to start my day.

ANYWAY! Breakfast:

I have an obsession with Lisa’s Pumpkin & Kumara Hummus. It’s soooo good! Whenever we buy it I have it on pretty much everything. This breakfast will keep me full ’til LUNCHTIME, it’s that good. Also, this is the perfect pre-gym fuel food.

and of course some coffee on the side πŸ™‚

I had this pretty face to keep me company in the kitchen…

I have a biiiiggg day planned! It’s 8am and already I’m running behind in my plans :S I’m going to the gym at 8.20, I’d like to workout for at least an hour. Then I’m going to go test out a scooter with my step dad that I’m considering buying (you should see it, it’s so darn cute!), then I’ve got to go into town with Emma and watch Dallas perform.

Expect to see lots of photos of that πŸ™‚

I plan to walk to the gym today instead of cycling like usual, just because the morning is so beautiful, I want to make the most of it. I think I might shower at the gym this time just to save time?

Do you like to shower at the gym?

Anyway, I’ve got to get my booty into gear and get started.

Time to BRING THE PAIN

WELL! Today has been one seriously intense day.Β It was swimming sports with school and then afterwards I had my NZ Army fitness test…

Swimming sports was lots of fun πŸ™‚ I entered 4 events but only competed in 3 because the 4th event was cancelled due to time constraints 😦
I swam in 1 length freestyle, 2 lengths freestyle and 1 length breaststroke. I sucked in the first two, but I didn’t expect any better. I haven’t been for a proper swim in about 3 weeks, HOWEVER- I came first in the 1 length breaststroke πŸ™‚ That made me very happy. The first time in my history at Trident High School that I came first in anything sports related.

I spent the day with 3 awesome friends and the time just flew by. I was pretty anxious the whole day though in anticipation of what would be to come at 4.30pm…..

I didn’t each much throughout the day. I had a small breakfast which was about 1 and a half eggs, 1/4 of a can of baked beans and 1 slice of toast.

I had to force myself to eat throughout the day at swimming sports. I ate two carrots and a small fruit bar, an apple and a marmite sandwich. When I got home I made sure to drink up (because I hadn’t had much water either) and eat some good, healthy food.

I had some green tea, an orange, a handful of Brazil nuts and a Green Monster containing: 1 banana, 4 small leaves of silverbeet, 1/4 cup of blueberries, 1 cup of skim milk, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon.
It was a it odd tasting, but I was glad I drank it. That stuff gives you such a huge energy boost!! I’d recommend it more than any energy drink available.

At 4.10pm I headed down to the Army hall. The weather’s been pretty on-off all day. Changing between sunshine and heavy showers the whole time, it was alright during swimming sports coz we were all wet anyways. The weather was looking pretty shite when I got there, but I have no problem exercising in rain so it didn’t phase me.

Out of 30 applicants from our area, EIGHT showed up for the fitness test. I don’t care, gives us more of a chance of being accepted!! Oh, by the way, I was the only girl there.

The fitness test was very much more difficult than I had ever anticipated… But as you know, I thrive on a challenge and a chance to work up a heart rate raising sweat so I stayed positive.

The test included:

  • 2.4K run (in under 10 minutes 30 seconds for guys, 12 minutes 20 seconds for girls)
  • Press-ups (ARMY STYLE!! VERY much more difficult than JENNY style lol. Minimum of 28 for guys, 15 for girls)
  • Curl-ups (minimum of 66 for guys and 50 for girls)

The run was killer… I got to the turnaround point and the Army guy in charge told me I’d need to really work hard on the way back to make it in time… Boy howdy did that light a fire beneath me. I HAULED SERIOUS ASS all through that 1.2 Kilometer! It was painful. I couldn’t breath very well, my throat burned, my stomach burned, my face burned, but I ran as quickly as I could.

When I made it to the finish line, I almost died of happiness when I heard my time was 11:57 πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ πŸ˜€ It wasn’t as great as it COULD have been, but hell, I DID IT!!! I ran the fastest I have ever run in my life and I’m so proud that I achieved the requirements for the run πŸ˜€

Next up was press ups. Those sucked… I felt terrible because I was only able to do 20 crappy ones. He said he’d count 16 rather than 20 because he goes for quality over quantity and I hadn’t done too well… Something to work on for the future I guess. I’m glad I achieved the minimum though πŸ™‚

Finally, there were the Curl Ups. He told us the minimum requirements, then he said that when you’re doing them, girls can stop when they reach 118 and guys can stop when they reach (something like) 130. I had never done that particular style of ab work before, but I was so glad that I’ve spent months and months working on my abs because I knew reaching 50 would be a breeze.

We were paired off and worked with our partner to count how many they did and to make sure they were maintaining form and doing them correctly.
When it was my turn, I just went for it. I gave it everything and focused on my breathing and making sure to use my abs. Well… this went far better than I could ever have anticipated because I did the full 118!!! I could’ve kept going but my neck started to hurt :/

I beat all the guys and after that had mad respect from them. It had started raining pretty heavily by then. The guy in charge took us all aside individually and we had a sort of interview. Then he spoke to us all as a group and told us that he’d get back to each of us within the next coming week. He told us we’ll receive one of three letters; saying either congratulations you’ve got a spot, we’re keeping you as a reserve or sorry, not this year.

Apparently there have been 80 applicants for this trip and there are 15 spots available… Pretty intense. I’m keeping my fingers crossed, hoping one of those 15 spots are mine.

If not, well now that I know what to expect I’ll just work 10 times harder and come back and whip some serious booty next year πŸ™‚

Anyway, I’m exhausted now, it’s been a loonngg and busy day and I’ve got heaps of homework to do before bed 😦

To all the Trident Students, hope you all had an awesome time at Swimming Sports πŸ™‚

Night all!

Grandma Penny’s Surprise birthday part recap… FINALLY!

Hey everyone! I’ve finally gotten around to being able to post this blog post haha.

Firstly, I have some good news! Today I participated in P.E 100% and it was INTERVAL TRAINING! Sprints! I was nervous and made a bad mistake of choosing to run without shoes, but I managed to complete the whole session.

The session included:

  • Thirteen 50 meter sprints with 1 minute intervals
  • Seventeen 10 meter sprints, starting with 1 minute intervals but ending in 30 second intervals due to time constraints.

As you can imagine, I was overly fast since I haven’t trained for speed in MANY months, but it felt amazing to just be doing it.

Anyway- As you guys know, on the 13th of February, my family and I threw my Grandma a surprise party at her house to celebrate her 70th birthday.

It was a huge success and everybody had an excellent time πŸ˜€ I couldn’t believe that the surprise actually worked because never in my life can I recall a surprise party actually going according to plan.

Anyway, my family had arranged for my uncle to take Grandma Penny out for a few hours at 2pm, giving us time to make the 1 hour trip and get the house sorted before the guests arrived at 4.30-5pm.

That went according to plan and Grant so skillfully took her to see “Avatar”, which was an excellent choice because it’s like 3 hours long lol.

We arrived on time and started setting up. I bought a packed lunch with me because I’d hit the gym hard that morning:

  • 20 minute run on the treadmill
  • 5 minute interval training on spin bike
  • 20 minute stationary bike ride
  • 5 minutes rowing
  • 20 minutes on the cross trainer
  • 5 minutes on the spin bike again
  • 10 minutes strength
  • 15 minute stretch

So you see, I knew I was bound to get hungry.

We set up the birthday banners, the food (what we’d bought. It was a pot-luck dinner), the wine, the glasses etc.

Eventually guests started arriving and it was drawing nearer and nearer to the time of Grandma Penny’s arrival.Β Everyone was super excited when we received the phone call from Grant to say they were almost home.

Then she arrived home…

πŸ™‚ It was PRICELESS!!! She couldn’t believe it, she was so shocked she started shaking.

I caught this legendary facial shot after she’d gone around and greeted all the guests.

This photo basically captures the essence of her that night.

The guests began to mingle, I had some wonderful chats with the guests and I was assigned as “official party photographer” and was instructed to go around taking photos of everyone and everything. Here we go:

Mum and Colleen,

Mum and Lynn,

My sister, Penny,

Te Mania, my Nephew πŸ™‚

The view from Grandma Penny’s house.

Grandma Penny and her friend.

A wine glass.

Then I asked to have a few family photos.

Mum, Sam and I.

Me and Penny.

After some photos, it was dinner time!!!
There was an impressive amount and variety of food.

I chose to have some rice with thai chicken, some of my sisters Lasagna, a slice of pizza, a piece of bacon and egg pie and some Salad.

I did end up going back for seconds of things. Specifically the bacon and egg pie and salad πŸ™‚

Soon after it was time for my favourite…. PUDDING!!! πŸ˜€ The selection was AMAZING.

I chose to have two different kinds of cheesecake and a scoop of Ambrosia. The yellow cheesecake was INCREDIBLE! It was so so so good, I want the recipe!

Shortly after that the clouds started rolling in…

Made for a good photo though:

Eventually people started winding down and leaving.

The night ended with a very happy (and drunk) Grandma Penny πŸ™‚

I caught this amazing photo of the Tauranga city lights…

The next day we had a great time. Our big family group went to the Mount and went out for lunch. (We originally had plans for the beach but in the morning the weather did not permit…)

We passed this GORGEOUS puppy, it was a cross between a Chihuahua and a Poodle πŸ™‚ adorable. We stopped to pat it for ages.

We agreed on a Turkish restaurant for lunch. I didn’t like it very much because the waiter was extremely rude and used nasty language. I ordered a chai latte (as usual) and Grandma Penny ordered a huge platter for us all to share.

My chai latte was a huge let down. It came with some weird, lumpy foam stuff on top…. didn’t know what was up with that and it tasted absolutely revolting. I scooped it all off and put it on my side dish. It looked like dog vomit.

I had a bite of my sisters Lamb kebab, THAT tasted good. I must admit, the food was divine because the platter tasted incredible too.

We couldn’t stay long, our family had to go our separate ways as we were all on tight schedules. Penny, Temania, Colleen and Jade all went back to Hamilton, Grant went back to Grandma Penny’s house and Mum, Mark, Sam, Grandma Penny and I all went to Otumoetai to go visit our old dog Tai πŸ™‚

It was so great to see him!!! He recognized us and was so excited he was jumping up to us and running around like a mad thing. It totally made my day. It also made me miss him HEAPS!!!

We couldn’t stay long, we had to get back to Whakatane. I was an excellent trip and I got to come home and spend the rest of Valentine’s Day with Dallas πŸ™‚

There you have it! Finally finished this recap haha. Been a long time coming. Hope you guys like it! I’ll have some SG’s up in the morning.

Goodnight!

xoxo

Food for thought.

Morning all! Hope you’re all excited and have some amazing plans for this beautiful Saturday morning πŸ™‚

I love Saturdays. They’re by far my favourite day of the week, and as of this year the only day I have completely off! :O That’s because of school and that I work on Sunday’s now.

Anyway, last night I had an excellent gym session.

I was very excited to go! πŸ™‚ (btw, do you like the new hairdo? dyed it black and got it cut)

I hadn’t been in THREE DAYS and so it had to be good. I had a fabulous cross-training workout which consisted of:

  • 2 minute walk warmup on the treadmill
  • 10 minute run on the treadmill
  • 5 minutes interval training on the spin bike (10 seconds of high resistance followed by 20 seconds recovery with low resistance)
  • 10 minutes on the stationary bike
  • 10 minutes on the rowing machine
  • 10 minutes on the Elliptical
  • 5 minutes spin bike interval training

I then did about a minute of skipping, a few press-ups and some hip strengthening exercises before coming home. The whole thing took about an hour and 20 minutes or so.

Today I reeeeaaallly need to go for a swim :/ Swimming sports is on Thursday and I’m no where near prepared for it. I’ll either try to fit one in before 10am (because we’re hosting a Japanese exchange student for 12 days and they have some activities planned at the beach at this time) or this afternoon.

I didn’t do the triathlon that I had planned for the 12th if anybody noticed. I came to the conclusion that I was simply ill-prepared.

ANYWAY! Moving on, as the subject line reads, here’s some food for thought..

I’ve discovered that with my body, when I have a more stabilizing, solid breakfast that somehow incorporates 2 eggs and 2 pieces of bread or toast, it sets me up for the whole day and I snack less on sugary foods and junk.

My usual morning breakfast is either French Toast with a dribble of maple syrup and a handful of frozen blueberries on each slice, or scrambled eggs on toast with the same toppings. I also try to fit in a piece of fruit somewhere along the line.

I have found that this breakfast is the only thing that keeps me full. Come interval and I’m still not hungry! it’s fantastic because then my interval snacks are enough to carry me happily over to lunch time.

Here’s the breakfast I had this morning:

As usual, eggs and carbs πŸ™‚ I hate people who claim that carbohydrates are bad.. That’s such crap in my opinion. I eat a ton of carbs because that’s what my body craves and I’ve LOST weight! You need carbohydrates to help keep you full and give you more energy, if you’re eating the right sort of carbs (wholegrains etc) then it’s not a problem!

Another thing is that I’ve decided to switch to a different Physiotherapist. And not just within the business, I mean an entirely different clinic. I have some serious issues with the very rude and unintelligent receptionist who has caused me more problems than I care to deal with, and I just can’t stand that revolting tongue bar she flashes around when she grins when she realized she completely screwed something up.

I have my first physio appointment with my new physio on Monday afternoon. Here’s hoping it works out!

I’m reading “Scar Tissue” by Anthony Kiedis again. It’s an incredible and inspiring autobiography, I think I’m more in love with it this time round than I was the first.

the Red Hot Chili Peppers are just so darn talented. They keep producing incredible music, over and over again. I heard rumours that there’s a new album on it’s way out this year, and I reeaallly hope that’s true! They’re my favourite band and I would die to see them live.

They’re also really really funny πŸ™‚ That’s something you’ll notice if you read AK’s book.

Check out this video clip for “Hump De Bump”, I love it! It cracks me up πŸ˜€ and seeing AK with grills… lol, no words….

What sort of foods do you eat to keep to full and sustained longer?

xoxo
