Bike ride from HELL!!!! (plus some good sounds)

OK, before I get into the main topic of this post, I have to share some amazing music with you that I’ve been listening to heaps lately:

(I dedicate this particular song to NATHANAEL :P)

And a beautiful cover by Lisa Origliasso:

And finally…

Isn’t it incredible how amazing music can be? It pretty much makes my life the best it can possibly be. I’d be so empty and unfulfilled if it weren’t for the incredible sounds that we have access to. I would love to make some amazing music, but unfortunately I’m limited to lyrics.. oh well.

Anyways, today I endured the worst bike ride of my life… Kinda reminded me of what Caitlin blogged about the other day.

Final Statistics:

  • Cycled 20.1 Kilometers
  • Duration: 54 minutes, 47 seconds

Man it was gruelling… One of the greatest mental challenges I have faced yet with exercising. I’m thankful to be so strong mentally to be able to push through and finish during workouts which are far more challenging than originally perceived to be…

What happened was that the route I had mapped out was just one VERY VERY long road. The road itself is probably around 20+ kilometers long. I left at 4pm with intentions of squeezing in a 40 minute cycle before The Ellen Show came on at 5pm. The plan was to cycle 30 minutes one way then turn around and cycle back (because with previous experience, the trip back is always dramatically quicker than the trip there. I had thought it would take around 20-25 minutes maximum).

The trip there was pretty tough, but bearable. There were only about 2 points in which my heart rate was really pumping up around the 85-90% range. Those points were hills, also it was reasonably windy but I guess when you’re cycling it’s always windy lol.
After 25 minutes I actually came to my mapped out turn-around point, about 10.5k’s up the road. I was very surprised, I had expected that point to be a lot farther down the road. Also I didn’t expect to get there so quickly. Nevertheless, I turned around and started heading back home.

It was hard right from the second I changed direction. The wind was absolutely POUNDING me and the ENTIRE WAY BACK I was battling against incredibly strong winds and many, many hills and uphill inclines. Instead of working at an easy 70% heart rate range, I was pumpin’ it at around 90% the entireย way home.ย It was so challenging, not only physically but mentally. There was a point, about 5 or 6 kilometers from Whakatane where I actually considered getting off and walking my bike those last few K’s. I was struggling so hard, I wanted to cry.

You wanna know the biggest motivation that kept me on that bike and pedaling like a maniac?

Yup. Not even kidding. Knowing I would miss the Ellen show if I walked was enough to keep me hauling ass all the way home lol.

It was SUCH A CHALLENGE! I did my best to stay focused and postive, thinking about how great it would be for my legs and my muscles, but it really didn’t help that I was starting to get hungry. My tummy was beginning to rumble because I didn’t adequately fuel before I left (obviously because I hadn’t expected to be cycling so intensely for so long!).
Also, I’m honestly not sure why but cycling makes me hungrier than any other form of exercise (although swimming actually comes pretty close). It’s weird because I don’t get very hungry with running these days and you burn ten times more calories running than you do cycling :/

I was so relieved to get home! My butt and thighs hurt so bad though, it took me a few minutes to adjust to walking. I sculled back two big cups of water, switched on the telly and relaxed into watching the Ellen show ๐Ÿ™‚ It felt great to remove my cycling outfit (which I promise to photograph myself in at some point, simply for the hilarity of it), and STRETCH out my sore legs and butt.

The great thing though is that I can feel myself gradually getting stronger and faster with cycling. Even though today’s cycle was horrible, I’ll keep it up and remember never to cycle that route ever again in my life haha!

I have enjoyed many good eats this evening. I had a milo with crumbs when I got back, a stuffed mini pumpkin for dinner, stuffed with mixed beans and cheese, one slice of pizza and a big bowl of fruit and yoghurt. Fruit was blueberries, apple and banana, it was goooooooood ๐Ÿ™‚

Now I’m sufficiently satisfied and exhausted!!! I plan to go and snuggle up in bed and read my book. It’s the last day of term tomorrow! And I’m off to the Army next week :S I’m so nervous but excited at the same time…

Home sick blues :(

I came home sick from work today ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I have a stomach ache which is painkiller resistant and pretty much dibilitating. Came on last night and was ok this morning but proceeded to worsen at a rapid rate. I slept for a total of THIRTEEN HOURS yesterday! I had a four hour nap (because I always sleep when I feel crook) in the afternoon and then slept solidly through the night. I was glad that I wasn’t kept awake by my stomach. However…
Biggest reason I’m pissed off?

I haven’t exercised in THREE DAYS and I had plans to go for a big run and a big cycle this weekend! argh, just my dumb luck. Guess it’ll have to wait until tomorrow.ย  might get up early (as in REAL early, 5-5.30am) and either run or go to the gym for a swim or something… A run would be most likely because I hate cycling in the dark.

In the meantime, I am craving these DESPERATELY!!

Good thing I don’t have any or else I’d devour them in about five seconds flat.ย  I’m a shocker when it comes to sweet foods, I’m really going to make a conscious effort to have healthier substitutes for sweet treats. I’m a big fan of Banana Soft Serve from Choosing Raw.
She has some EXCELLENT recipes for dessert substitutes, I’m fascinated by them! I never would’ve thought to try any of them, and when I tried the soft serve I almost died of happiness. It tasted even better than my favourite ice cream ๐Ÿ˜€ now that’s saying something because all it is is food processed banana! Genius!

Damn, if I was that creative, good at cooking, had better self-discipline and self-control and if we had no chocolate or ice cream currently in our house… things would be A LOT different around these parts…. Lol.

Have I ever mentioned my interest in becoming a Nutritionist? But that’s more of a back-up plan for if becoming a personal trainer doesn’t work out. I don’t think I’m a good enough cook though, I’m seriously no natural. I can follow a recipe though, it just requires A LOT of concentration.

Anyway, I’m currently watching Gossip Girl for the first time in ages, I have the opportunity today because I’m off sick from work.

By the way, a little heads up that big change is in the air… I won’t say anymore on the matter, but I just thought I’d warn you ๐Ÿ˜‰

Have a good night everybody!

Hey there, my name's Jenny. I have a huge passion for cooking/baking, writing, yoga and photography. I love nature and my favourite thing to do is spend an entire day outside, breathing in crisp, fresh air. Even better if I have a pen and paper with me. I started out running in March 2009 but sustained an injury in October 2009 which has unfortunately prevented me from running. I've been experimenting with other kinds of exercise to find another one that clicks. Follow me on my journey to maintaining good health + surviving high school and pursuing a career in Journalism.
