30 Day Challenge + A solution to my problem

Right now I’m sitting at home in front of the fire watching Julie and Julia by myself and it’s brilliant 🙂

So this challenge is actually for tumblr using short posts, but I thought I could also use this as a way to further my skills in article writing and analysis, and in turn, make them more interesting for you to read 🙂
I’m really excited about this challenge and I MUST finish it! I seem to have a terrible habit of starting “challenges” on my blog and never finishing them… Consider this a challenge within a challenge, a challenge to finish.

Of course I’ll also post these days in conjunction with my regular writing on fitness and health, it may even add up to two to three posts a day which I would prefer 🙂

In other news…

Remember this morning’s post on my motivation issues for exercise during Winter? (which actually officially starts in 2 days). Well I think I’ve found my solution… Trail walking!! Today my family and I went on a trip to the beach to search for Moko the dolphin, and instead ended up walking half of the Toi’s track. (I completed the Toi’s Challenge last year, an 18.5 Kilometre trail run/walk. I walked it with Mum) In our travels I expressed my issue to Mum and she suggested that I start Bush walking instead because I love nature, I love being outside all day and it’s low-impact which would lower my chances of gaining injuries since we all know how injury prone I am. I welcomed the suggestion with MORE than open arms as you can imagine. It’s perfect! It’s makes absolute sense and I’m definitely going to give it a go. I no longer enjoy running because of the pain and I’ve grown sick and tired of exercising at the gym in an enclosed, confined space. I’ve begun to feel as though exercising at the gym almost defeats the purpose of exercise. Now when I think of exercise I consider it to be something you do as a means of getting closer to nature and sucking fresh air into your lungs. Working out in a gym is boring and restricting, making it impossible to get any of that.

I considered today my first trial day for bush walking. I had an absolute BLAST! I felt happier and livelier than I have in weeks, it was refreshing and rejuvenating.

Some of you may know that I haven’t been feeling very happy lately, but I’ve come to realize that you sort of have to make your own happiness. FIND your own happiness. You can’t just sit and wait for good things to happen to you, you have to be proactive and help them happen. I’ve taken a new and improved approach to things and have been productive with myself, which has, in turn, boosted my happiness 🙂

I hope you all enjoyed your Saturday as much as I did. I’ll now resume to being engrossed in this film and mentally plan my post for Day One of my 30 day challenge which you can expect to see tomorrow morning.

New habits + an unusual problem….

Hey guys!! I’m baaackk 🙂

Did you miss me? 😉
I’ve decided to resume regular blogging since I think I’ve successfully made it “back on track”. I’m very happy with my lifestyle at the moment, and let me tell you.. There have been some major changes!!

Where to begin…!?!

Well firstly, I have taken up JuJitsu. This may be a surprise for some of you, but throughout my entire life I’ve had something of a fascination with Martial Arts and I’ve always wanted to try it, but somehow have never found the courage to be proactive about it. Body Combat was a start for me but I still wanted to take things further. So when I discovered that they now hold JuJitsu classes twice a week at my gym, I was ecstatic and came along to the next class to check it out.

It. Was. AWESOME!

It was a whole new world of exercise and empowerment. There is something so uplifting about knowing you have the ability to flip someone on their back no matter how big or small they are.

I’ve been to 2 classes so far and I’m already hooked. I’m bruised everywhere in places I’ve never been bruised before, but it’s worth it 🙂

Last night I went the extra mile and at 5pm I went to JuJitsu for an hour, then at 6 I headed to Body Combat from 6.15-7.15pm! I was sooo stuffed! It felt great though 🙂 and it’s very satisfying to know that I gave it %100.

I’m definitely going to keep JuJitsu up, it helped me to be so calm and relaxed after a particularly bad day at school. I think that if I keep this up I’ll be able to get through the year maintaining a calm, relaxed mindset 🙂

There are 2 classes a week that I can attend and I plan to go to both, but obviously one of the classes are on the same night as Body Combat. I can make it to both classes if I skip the conditioning for Jujitsu. I’ll be super stuffed by the time I come home from it all but hey, I think it’ll be worth it 🙂 If it’s too much then I’ll drop body combat. I have to pay for that class each week, whereas I can go to Jujitsu whenever for free with my gym membership.

I also went to Zumba on Monday night again! hahaha. I’m sorry, but that class just does not do it for me eh. I tried to like it but it’s just not happening. Think I’ll stick to my usual cardio training on Monday nights 🙂

After the first JuJitsu class I attended my knee’s felt really REALLY bad. I had to take extremely strong pain killers and use a ton of anti-flamme, just to be able to sit down and stand back up again. I concentrated on my technique last night to see if I could alter it slightly in a way that meant less pressure on my knees and I think it worked. They felt heaps better after class last night.

Anyway, in other news…

I have an unusual problem at the moment…

My problem is that in the last 1-2 weeks, I’ve developed a horrible tendency to be insanely fussy with my food. It’s crazy, for example, Feijoas I have loved all my life, and then now I hate them. I can’t stand the smell or the taste, even looking at them turns my stomach! This is so weird!! I can’t understand how I can go from loving something, to hating it virtually overnight!

Other examples are things like waking up in the morning, starving and usually I’ll be craving something and know exactly what I want. But now when I wake up, nothing appeals to me. I’m hungry but I don’t want anything to eat.

I’ve been having this same problem coming home from the gym. I’ll want something to eat but there’s nothing appealing so I won’t eat at all.

I’ve been skipping meals due to this problem and it’s BAD!

Does anyone have any advice on how to counter this? Or help me love food again?!?

Help!!!!

Unexpected turn of events.

This morning I got up, ate my pre-run fuel of a toasted bagel with peanut butter and Jam and half a banana, drank my cup of coffee and large glass of water and head out the door.

I ran for a slow 42 minutes and 34 seconds. I worked it out to be 6.2 kilometres. I felt great through the entire run and I felt as though I  could’ve run for another 3 hours! Thing was, my knees were HURTING BAD!
Not in the usual place though :/ This time they were hurting on the INSIDES (???) rather than the outside as usual. I have no idea what was up with that, but since the pain wasn’t debilitating I didn’t stop. I just carried on slowly on the grass until I reached home. Once I got home I stretched and iced my knees for ten minutes, they felt fine afterwards.

I showered and was just about to get my 2 breakfast of the day, by now it was about 10.20am, when I received a phone call…………………..
FROM MY BOSS! Saying that I was rostered on to work today from 10 until 4 and I should be in and could I come in as soon as possible.

I had a big freak out because I had absolutely no knowledge whatsoever that I was meant to be working, I hadn’t seen that shift when I looked at the roster last week. Never the less, I wolfed down breakfast which was awful- 2 pieces of toast with extra-lite cream cheese and COLD baked beans. Bleh!

I styled my hair quicker than ever and threw together “lunch” and my “snack” which was 1 banana, 1 apple and a small serving of fejoa crumble. I hopped on my scooter and took off as quick as legally possible.
Tell you what, 50 k’s per hour seems RREEAALLL slow when you’re running an hour late to work.

Once I got there, it was HECTIC! We were flat out all day with our easter sale. Good thing was though that it meant the day absolutely flew by and before I knew it it was 4pm and time for me to head home.

Once I got home I ate a couple of cheds crackers with sliced pickle on top, then 2 squares of chocolate. What I was REALLY craving though was a 6-inch ham sub from Subway, which thankfully was today’s “sub of the day”.

I drove all the way into town just to get a sub lol. I’m impossible when I’m craving something in particular. I will not be satisfied unless I eat that particular food. I ordered a 6-inch sub on Wheat bread with Ham, all the salads (apart from Jalapenos) and sweet onion + honey mustard sauce. I skipped the cheese today, that’s something I can do without and it doesn’t really make a dramatic change to the taste of the sub so no losses there.

I slept terribly last night and was freaked out by a shallow earthquake we had around midnight so my heart was pumping for ages and I couldn’t relax. I’m exhausted and hope to sleep well tonight!!!!!

Off to Tauranga tomorrow in preparation to depart to Waiouru!! I’m going to finish packing my bags tonight 😉

BIG NEWS! + The importance of stretching

WOW! It has been an insanely busy past few days. Working Sunday’s is really making me appreciate full weekends lol.

School is already getting busy which I’m happy about. I can tell it’s going to be a really hectic year…

I have some really exciting news!!! Secondary schools around New Zealand have been offered the opportunity to go on a NZ Army Careers Experience trip.
I’m not sure if any of you know, but my other option aside from Massey University would be to join the NZ Army and get my Personal Training qualifications through that.
It would be an excellent choice because I would gain so much knowledge, I’d be at the peak of my fitness, I’d get PAID to be there and have all other expenses paid for me, I’d be under strict discipline (which I actually enjoy), and I’d always have a job there in the Army if I wanted it. Also, If I went on to study something outside of the Army at University later on, they pay my uni fees! SWEET DEAL!

On February 25th they are holding the fitness test to see whether I’m fit enough to qualify for the trip (I’m pretty confident I’ll pass, I had a test today which I’ll talk more about later in this post), it consists of a 2.4k run, press-ups and sit-ups. I’m not sure how many, but I’m keen to take the challenge. I can push myself to do amazing things when I want to.

I handed in my completed form to the careers advisor today and now I simply wait to see what will happen next 🙂

Today I had my “Fame” audition!! I Shall now reveal what song I sang….

I know right, anyone who knows me will be absolutely blown away by this lol. But hey, what can I say? She’s got a good voice! haha.

Moving on- Today I had my fitness assessment at the gym. I decided to get a training plan put together for me so I know what I’m actually doing and don’t injure myself with any of the strength moves…
IT WAS SO INTENSE! The trainer was awesome 😀 He was a real cool guy and we got along famously. I pushed my muscles harder than they’ve ever been pushed before, and boy HOWDY am I now feeling it!

I feel like jelly all over. Moving anywhere takes an enormous amount of effort.

I learnt something awesome too! It made my entire WEEK I swear haha! Part of the evaluation/assessment is to bike solidly for 10 minutes at varying levels of difficulty, staying between the speeds of 57-61 (which is a lot harder than it sounds) and they machine measures your heart rate. I found out that my cardio levels are pretty much excellent 😀 The trainer told me that he was very impressed and that they were pretty much the best you can get. I was SO happy to know I hadn’t lost my cardiovascular fitness and I was keep in great shape.

At the end, another of the trainers helped teach me this ridiculously painful stretch to stretch my Iliotibial Band (the muscle in your outer quad which is what is causing my knee pain, mine is too tight and doesn’t get stretch properly or often enough). It was so sore, I was yelling in pain most of the time (the guys found this absolutely hilarious lol), but I seriously felt so much better afterwards.

I must remind you all that stretching is SO SO IMPORTANT!! Never skip stretching just because it’s “boring” or “painful” or you “can’t be bothered”. Stretching is an excellent way to help your body recover from physical activity and help prevent injury. It’s tedious and usually painful at the time, but you come out so much better off. I’ve never finished a stretch feeling worse, I always leave feeling loosened up and more relaxed.

To get in a decent stretch, it usually takes around 15-20 minutes. Well for me it does anyway, because I tend to work my entire body during a workout and so I like to stretch as best I can. Each stretch should be held for 15 to 20 seconds, any less than that and it won’t have any effect. It takes the muscle that length of time to actually respond to the stretch.

Here are just a few of the stretches that you can do after a workout:

Honestly, if you skip stretching your muscles will get so tense and so tight, it will feel horrible, painful and can cause injury. Releasing those muscles is such a painful process (by process of deep-tissue massage… NOT FUN) that after you’ve gone through it, you wonder why you didn’t just bother to stretch at the time.

One of the main factors of my knee injuries is because I never used to stretch properly. My Iliotibial band and hamstrings got so tight that now they’re pulling my knees out. Every physio session is spent enduring a 40 minute deep-tissue massage which is so ridiculously painful it’s hard to hold a conversation, and acupuncture, which despite what you may have heard, HURTS!!!

Anyway, I hope that helped you understand how important stretching is… in other news!

Last night I had the biggest workout at the gym. I wanted to imagine I was in Triathlon conditions, so I biked on the Stationary bike for 30 minutes, RAN for 15 minutes (happily without pain!), did a few press-ups as per Army preparation, then swam for 30 minutes.

It was one HEARTY workout and the swim felt great to be honest. I’m stuffed today though!

I participated in P.E today and did the most running that I’ve ever done in the last 2-3 months since my injury.

I was taking it easy and jogging, I wore my running shoes and it really helped that we were on the grass because there was less impact. I was doing interval running for about 40 minutes before… the most unbelievable, unfortunate thing happened…

MY LEFT HIP GOT SORE. As in, the way my RIGHT hip was :/ I’m so annoyed at myself… when I was rehabilitating, I concentrating solely on strengthening my right side because I’d never had problems with my left side, now my left hip is sore and I’m back to square one 😦

Time to haul ass and strengthen those glutes ASAP!

I stopped running and sat out for the rest of the session. I did some hip stretches which gave instant relief but now my hip is hurting again :/ I’ve been stretching it a lot and it’s really helping, but I’ll just need to rest it for a couple of days and then get straight into working those glutes to fix it the way I did my right.

Anyway, I’m absolutely stuffed, my muscles are like Jelly and the season premier of Greys Anatomy is on in 25 minutes 😀 I’m so excited! Last nights repeat of the previous season finale was so sad it made me cry. It also made me want to ring up all my loved ones and tell them just how much I love them and they mean to me. I can’t wait to see tonight’s episode 🙂

Upcoming Challenges.

Hey guys!

School was great today 🙂 Just so you know. I’m starting to feel even more positive about it, and the fact that the production auditions start on Monday makes things even more exciting 😀

My audition is on Monday and I can’t wait!!!! I’ve prepared my song, but I won’t tell you what it is until after I’ve sung it 😉 For those of you who don’t know, I think you’ll get a bit of a shock haha.

Now, the purpose of this blog post is so I can fill you guys in on the upcoming sporting challenges that lie ahead for little old me.

Upcoming Challenges for 2010.

I’m sooo excited!! One of my New Years Resolutions and Bucket List choices were to complete a triathlon, and even though this one is tiny, it sounds perfect for me for where I am in my exercise right now.

The race consists of a 300 meter swim, 10k bike ride and 2.5k run or walk. I know, it’s tiny! But that’s why I’m attracted to it. As my readers know, I’m recovering from a serious knee/hip injury which has caused me to take a two month running Hiatus and do nothing but swim or use the Elliptical.

I’ve been seeing regular physio therapy to help recover and my rehabilitation is coming along nicely 🙂 My knees are very slowly beginning to ease up and my hip is perfect.

I’m still not back into running, but I’m starting to test the grounds a little bit by running here and there. Initially when I got my injury, I couldn’t cycle either because that aggravated my knees.

After a decent rest, I’m able to cycle a lot further and of a higher intensity. I’ve become quite a confident swimmer also, so to me, this triathlon sounds perfect for me. If the run is too hard on me, I’ll simply slow to a walk or a jog which will be fine because the race isn’t about winning.

I’ve got a decent bike.

So I think I’m pretty much prepared in terms of gear. I’m a little nervous to start running again, I don’t want to aggravate my knees and worsen the injury.

I’m being very cautious about running, I’ve tested it a little bit and I find that I can go for 5-10 minutes with minimal pain, but after that it gets more challenging. I’m determined to complete that triathlon though, and I shall do it even if I have to walk the final stretch.

  • Secondly, I’m going to participate in school Swimming Sports for the first time since year nine 😛

I think I’ll enter as many Breaststroke events as I can and maybe a couple of lengths of freestyle. I’m still not very good at freestyle and I get tired quickly, so I usually can’t go for any longer than 3-4 lengths without stopping for a break.

  • Thirdly, Athletics Day at school.

I should point out that since I’m in P.E Elite, these school events are compulsory anyway, but I’m listing them here because for the first time, I’ll be willingly entering them with enthusiasm.

I want to enter as many events as possible on Athletics day, apart from sprints, for obvious reasons…

It sounds like a ton of fun with some great prizes, and I’m always keen to get a new accomplishment under my belt 🙂

  • School X-Country.

This is still kinda up in the air atm. I’m not 100% sure if I’ll be ready to run by then, I’m just gonna take it slow and play it by ear.

That’s all I know of for this year in terms of fitness events. I’m sure there will be more coming! And I can’t wait to let you know about them 😀

I’m so excited for this year and can’t wait to see how things pan out.

Evening stroll

Ok, before I get to the main topic of this post, I’d just like to show you before and after shots of my arms. I’m so proud of how much muscle tone I’ve managed to build 😀

Anyway, this evening I decided to do something I have not done in MONTHS. I decided to go for an evening walk, simply for the fresh air and the chance to photograph my surroundings.

I really really enjoyed it. It was nice to just take my time, enjoy the scenery, stop to take photos.

At one point, this cat kept me amused for a solid 2 minutes lol.

I was really anxious about knee pain or hip pain, my walk was about 2.5 Kilometers and it took me around 50 minutes (taking my time, dawdling, stopping to take photos etc etc), but I can happily say that I experienced little to no pain! 🙂

I went to the physiotherapist again today. She ended up giving my left leg a massage and then acupuncture. I must admit, I was pretty squeamish with the needles… I don’t know when I’ll ever overcome that silly phobia!

It ended up feeling pretty good once the needles were in place. I was lying on my side and had needles from my feet up to my hip, I was sweating with anxiety at first, but then I started to relax a little bit while she left them in. It felt like this big wave of warmth was continuously washing through my leg.

She only did one leg so I could compare the two and see how it goes, whether it makes a difference or not. I think it has because my leg is already starting to feel normal again 😀

Tomorrow morning I’m starting my day with a gym session. Since I didn’t swim today I shall swim tomorrow for 30 minutes, followed by 30 minutes on the Elliptical, then maybe 10 or 15 on the rowing machine.

Happy New Year! 2010 Resolutions.

Good Morning! Happy New Year to each and every single one of you. I hope you had a fantastic night and that you’re continuing to enjoy yourself today on the 1st of January 2010 😀

Yesterday I got some funky as new clothes! Check out these super cute earrings.

I also got two new tops and a denim mini skirt:

I love it 😀

Anyway, moving on to my 2010 New Years Resolutions.

Since writing this list, I’ve added a few more things:

– Quit my morning coffee habit, drink Green Tea instead.

– Learn something interesting.

– Maintain and control my weight/weight loss.

– Learn to Scuba Dive.

I’m making it my goal to maintain healthy living as best I can 🙂 I don’t want it to be something that some would consider to be just a “phase”.

Great news is that my knees and hip are feeling great! I’m looking for a new physiotherapist in Whakatane to continue on with my treatment and I won’t start running again until I can get my proper shoes.
