The pleasure of walking, yoga noob + social sport?

Yesterday I went on a glorious 4k walk with Kristine and her dog Max 🙂

The weather was so perfect, spring is definitely kicking in! It was so great to actually go for a walk just for the sake of walking. I haven’t done that in months and it was so refreshing. The dog seemed to have a great time and I can’t wait until my puppy Coco is trained to walk on a leash 🙂 I wanted to take either her or my Granddad’s dog Veeta for a walk this afternoon but the sky is BLACK!

So instead I’m snuggled up at home in front of the fire with a cup of green tea and the August issue of Australian Women’s Health magazine.

Oh, and this beautiful face to keep me company 🙂

I would really like to give Yoga a good go, every time I’ve been to a class I’ve really really enjoyed it but I don’t know what classes there are available here in Whakatane. Does anyone have any good classes to suggest or any websites with podcasts I can download with good yoga moves? I’m a total newbie and I’m not flexible at all and pretty horrendous at yoga really, but I love the feeling of satisfaction you get afterwards.

I’m struggling a lot right now to find exercise that isn’t extremely painful with my knees. Running is pretty much completely out of the question now and even long distance cycling. Jiu Jitsu is proving to be painful and a challenge as well, hence why I want to give Yoga a go and start walking a lot more. I might start swimming a bit more too because the outside swimming pool is now open down town. I’d also really love to have a social game of something each week on like a Friday or something. Soccer or Basketball etc, just something fun and relaxed, no pressure or anything. If anyone is interested in joining me, let me know! Leave a comment or send me an email:

The perfect Saturday

Today has been an EXCELLENT day! I’m so pleased because nothing makes Sunday’s when I’m working during beautiful weather worse than knowing I wasted my Saturday (especially if there was great weather). We’ve finally had a weekend with sunshine and it’s so nice, I really wanted to make sure that I didn’t waste the opportunity and instead get outside and make the most of the sunshine and fresh air. I made plans with Kristine for the afternoon so the morning was spent with Mum. I took her with me to look at a ball dress I’ve had my eye on and I tried it on for her. I loved it even more than the first time so we decided to put it on lay-by… So exciting!! After that we went to the business and leisure show and got a few freebies. All in all though this years was a bit of a disappointment compared to last years :/ Mostly coz I didn’t get any free exercise class vouchers haha.  Day 3 of my mission to get in shape and get healthy before the ball has gone swimmingly! I’m so pleased and surprised at my overnight diet transformation. I haven’t had any issues with resisting temptation to gorge myself on high-sugar, high-fat foods like baking, chocolate and ice cream. It’s fantastic!!! At this rate I should be seeing some good results pretty quickly.

After returning from the Business and Leisure show I ate lunch quickly and then once Kristine had come over we head off to do the Bird Walk together. I’m so glad to have a friend who is just as passionate about healthy eating and exercise as I am. I’ve finally found my long-awaited exercise buddy! 😀 Maybe she’ll help me stay out of the exercise rut next winter? 😉

It was a great walk but my legs were really sore from a 5k run I did yesterday afternoon because I haven’t run in a while and so the stairs were rather unforgiving… Nevertheless we manage to have an excellent time, take some photos and get a good work out!

Yes, I wear overalls with a Veronicas tshirt and a backpack whilst hiking…

Kristine insisted on drinking the water lol. I did not encourage it haha.

We walked to town from there and then to the video shop where we rented “Boy” to watch when we got home.

I made us delicious smoothies with soy milk, cranberry juice, cinnamon, banana, strawberry, raspberry and blueberry. It. Was. AMAZING!!! We watched Boy while we drank our smoothies and it was the best way to relax and rest our legs after walking for 3 hours. I’d been getting pretty hungry too!

I’m working tomorrow but that’s ok because today was awesome ^.^

I hope you all enjoyed your Saturday as much as I did!

The glue that holds everything together.

I had an interesting conversation with Kristine at lunchtime today.

We were talking about New Zealand food and how much it differs from Norwegian food and that it’s got waaaay more fat and sugar. I said I was feeling really stink at the way my eating habits have completely gone down the drain this winter and that I wanted to make a real effort to improve my diet as best I can. This led us to discuss the things that sort of complete us. We both agreed on one thing: exercise and a healthy diet is the one thing we both need in order to function as regular human beings. For me I struggle to maintain a positive attitude and enjoy anything if one, the other or both of those two things are out of whack.

Because this has been such a particularly bad winter for me in terms of diet, it’s really important for me to remember what makes me tick and how I’m in control and can make a change any time I want, starting from the next meal. As the title says, having a healthy body is the glue that holds everything together. If I’m not healthy my mind feels cluttered and blocked, I feel gross and depressed. I cannot focus on anything and even the things that I enjoy heaps like writing is dissatisfying, I need to de-clutter my mind before I can do anything else. I literally cannot generate useful thoughts if I’m unhealthy.

Spring is fast approaching and I want to sort myself out now so that come summer I’m already in shape and happy so I don’t need to worry or stress about anything, I’ll be able to walk straight onto the beach in my bikini without a second thought. It puzzles me as to why I seem to hit this wall every winter and lose motivation to exercise. I know it’s one of the things I’m most passionate about and I feel amazing while I’m doing it and even better afterward, but like clockwork I get lazy each time. Next winter I will make it my main focus to try and maintain my routine as best I can without being phased by the cold. There are ways around everything!

Because spring is nearly here, I’m looking forward to having exciting spring blog posts! My blog posts from spring through to summer are some of my favourite, and as the exciting events that follow with those seasons there should be some good blogging to follow 🙂

In other news, I have muesli bars in the fridge that I spent an hour working on, using a recipe that I concocted out of thin air. I really hope they’re successful and don’t just fall apart straight out of the tin!

Is there something that is your “glue”? That really completes you and helps you maintain good overall well-being?

30 Day Challenge + A solution to my problem

Right now I’m sitting at home in front of the fire watching Julie and Julia by myself and it’s brilliant 🙂

It sparked my mind about my own blog and I wondered how I could create some fun, new and exciting posts to keep things fresh… Then I discovered this" “30 Day Challenge” which I felt was the perrrrfect way to achieve all that.

Here’s how it works/what it is:

Day 02 — Your favourite movie
Day 03 — Your favourite television program
Day 04 — Your favourite book
Day 05 — Your favourite quote
Day 06 — Whatever tickles your fancy
Day 07 — A photo that makes you happy
Day 08 — A photo that makes you angry/sad
Day 09 — A photo you took
Day 10 — A photo of you taken over ten years ago
Day 11 — A photo of you taken recently
Day 12 — Whatever tickles your fancy
Day 13 — A fictional book
Day 14 — A non-fictional book
Day 15 — A fanfic
Day 16 — A song that makes you cry (or nearly)
Day 17 — An art piece (painting, drawing, sculpture, etc.)
Day 18 — Whatever tickles your fancy

Day 24 — Whatever tickles your fancy

Day 26 — Your week, in great detail
Day 27 — This month, in great detail
Day 28 — This year, in great detail
Day 29 — Hopes, dreams and plans for the next 365 days
Day 30 — Whatever tickles your fancy

So this challenge is actually for tumblr using short posts, but I thought I could also use this as a way to further my skills in article writing and analysis, and in turn, make them more interesting for you to read 🙂
I’m really excited about this challenge and I MUST finish it! I seem to have a terrible habit of starting “challenges” on my blog and never finishing them… Consider this a challenge within a challenge, a challenge to finish.

Of course I’ll also post these days in conjunction with my regular writing on fitness and health, it may even add up to two to three posts a day which I would prefer 🙂

Let me know your thoughts on this!

In other news…

Remember this morning’s post on my motivation issues for exercise during Winter? (which actually officially starts in 2 days). Well I think I’ve found my solution… Trail walking!! Today my family and I went on a trip to the beach to search for Moko the dolphin, and instead ended up walking half of the Toi’s track. (I completed the Toi’s Challenge last year, an 18.5 Kilometre trail run/walk. I walked it with Mum) In our travels I expressed my issue to Mum and she suggested that I start Bush walking instead because I love nature, I love being outside all day and it’s low-impact which would lower my chances of gaining injuries since we all know how injury prone I am. I welcomed the suggestion with MORE than open arms as you can imagine. It’s perfect! It’s makes absolute sense and I’m definitely going to give it a go. I no longer enjoy running because of the pain and I’ve grown sick and tired of exercising at the gym in an enclosed, confined space. I’ve begun to feel as though exercising at the gym almost defeats the purpose of exercise. Now when I think of exercise I consider it to be something you do as a means of getting closer to nature and sucking fresh air into your lungs. Working out in a gym is boring and restricting, making it impossible to get any of that.

I considered today my first trial day for bush walking. I had an absolute BLAST! I felt happier and livelier than I have in weeks, it was refreshing and rejuvenating.

Some of you may know that I haven’t been feeling very happy lately, but I’ve come to realize that you sort of have to make your own happiness. FIND your own happiness. You can’t just sit and wait for good things to happen to you, you have to be proactive and help them happen. I’ve taken a new and improved approach to things and have been productive with myself, which has, in turn, boosted my happiness 🙂

I hope you all enjoyed your Saturday as much as I did. I’ll now resume to being engrossed in this film and mentally plan my post for Day One of my 30 day challenge which you can expect to see tomorrow morning.

Last night we had SIX earthquakes here in Whakatane, varying between 3 to 4.6 on the Richter scale. Now, I don’t know about you, but earthquakes freak me out!! The worst thing is that they always seem to happen at night as well, which is scary because I have this huge fear that an enormous natural disaster will happen at night time and destroy everything and it’ll be chaos in the dark :/ Sounds lame, but honestly, it freaks me out 😦

We also had 4 earthquakes while I was at school and 2 before hand.

I’m actually really concerned about how many earthquakes we HAVE been having. We have had around TWENTY TWO earthquakes since Sunday. That’s insane! I’m a worry-wart to begin with, but this has me seriously on edge. I don’t know what to expect, I don’t know whether these are just clusters that will pass, or whether it’s a build up to “the big one”….

Who knows…?

For now I’ll just try to chill and stay relatively positive. What will be will be I guess.

Some of you may know this, but my poor little bro was admitted to hospital on Sunday night with suspected Pneumonia but then after a couple of days they changed their diagnosis to Sinusitis.
He had to stay in hospital for four days until his temperature finally settled down, it reached heights of 41.2 degrees!!! That’s insane!!

He’s out of hospital now and is feeling quite a lot better, he’s perked up and his appetite has returned 🙂

He was so brave though!!

We’re keeping a watchful eye on him to make sure he stays well.

I went to the Bay Of Plenty Times on Tuesday for a work choice day school trip. I was so interested since I’m considering a career in Journalism. I was happy to find that it was exactly how I imagined it would be and so there were no disappointments 🙂 It’s crazy just how much work goes into producing one newspaper a week… It’s hectic! I liked that though, I like to be kept on my feet 🙂

Anyway, tonight I’m going to Jujitsu and then Body Combat and afterwards I’m babysitting! Phew! It’s going to be an exhausting night. Lets hope the Earthquakes lay off tonight so I can get some decent sleep!

Bike ride from HELL!!!! (plus some good sounds)

OK, before I get into the main topic of this post, I have to share some amazing music with you that I’ve been listening to heaps lately:

(I dedicate this particular song to NATHANAEL :P)

And a beautiful cover by Lisa Origliasso:

And finally…

Isn’t it incredible how amazing music can be? It pretty much makes my life the best it can possibly be. I’d be so empty and unfulfilled if it weren’t for the incredible sounds that we have access to. I would love to make some amazing music, but unfortunately I’m limited to lyrics.. oh well.

Anyways, today I endured the worst bike ride of my life… Kinda reminded me of what Caitlin blogged about the other day.

Final Statistics:

  • Cycled 20.1 Kilometers
  • Duration: 54 minutes, 47 seconds

Man it was gruelling… One of the greatest mental challenges I have faced yet with exercising. I’m thankful to be so strong mentally to be able to push through and finish during workouts which are far more challenging than originally perceived to be…

What happened was that the route I had mapped out was just one VERY VERY long road. The road itself is probably around 20+ kilometers long. I left at 4pm with intentions of squeezing in a 40 minute cycle before The Ellen Show came on at 5pm. The plan was to cycle 30 minutes one way then turn around and cycle back (because with previous experience, the trip back is always dramatically quicker than the trip there. I had thought it would take around 20-25 minutes maximum).

The trip there was pretty tough, but bearable. There were only about 2 points in which my heart rate was really pumping up around the 85-90% range. Those points were hills, also it was reasonably windy but I guess when you’re cycling it’s always windy lol.
After 25 minutes I actually came to my mapped out turn-around point, about 10.5k’s up the road. I was very surprised, I had expected that point to be a lot farther down the road. Also I didn’t expect to get there so quickly. Nevertheless, I turned around and started heading back home.

It was hard right from the second I changed direction. The wind was absolutely POUNDING me and the ENTIRE WAY BACK I was battling against incredibly strong winds and many, many hills and uphill inclines. Instead of working at an easy 70% heart rate range, I was pumpin’ it at around 90% the entire way home. It was so challenging, not only physically but mentally. There was a point, about 5 or 6 kilometers from Whakatane where I actually considered getting off and walking my bike those last few K’s. I was struggling so hard, I wanted to cry.

You wanna know the biggest motivation that kept me on that bike and pedaling like a maniac?

Yup. Not even kidding. Knowing I would miss the Ellen show if I walked was enough to keep me hauling ass all the way home lol.

It was SUCH A CHALLENGE! I did my best to stay focused and postive, thinking about how great it would be for my legs and my muscles, but it really didn’t help that I was starting to get hungry. My tummy was beginning to rumble because I didn’t adequately fuel before I left (obviously because I hadn’t expected to be cycling so intensely for so long!).
Also, I’m honestly not sure why but cycling makes me hungrier than any other form of exercise (although swimming actually comes pretty close). It’s weird because I don’t get very hungry with running these days and you burn ten times more calories running than you do cycling :/

I was so relieved to get home! My butt and thighs hurt so bad though, it took me a few minutes to adjust to walking. I sculled back two big cups of water, switched on the telly and relaxed into watching the Ellen show 🙂 It felt great to remove my cycling outfit (which I promise to photograph myself in at some point, simply for the hilarity of it), and STRETCH out my sore legs and butt.

The great thing though is that I can feel myself gradually getting stronger and faster with cycling. Even though today’s cycle was horrible, I’ll keep it up and remember never to cycle that route ever again in my life haha!

I have enjoyed many good eats this evening. I had a milo with crumbs when I got back, a stuffed mini pumpkin for dinner, stuffed with mixed beans and cheese, one slice of pizza and a big bowl of fruit and yoghurt. Fruit was blueberries, apple and banana, it was goooooooood 🙂

Now I’m sufficiently satisfied and exhausted!!! I plan to go and snuggle up in bed and read my book. It’s the last day of term tomorrow! And I’m off to the Army next week :S I’m so nervous but excited at the same time…

A Day Of Photography with my dear friend Emma

Firstly, I went to the gym yesterday with intentions of a workout about an hour and ten minutes. Well, I was so so exhausted on the Elliptical, literally YAWNING while I was going. I just felt so tired, like my body needed a rest. I finished my 30 minute elliptical workout, then decided against the rowing machine and went for a swim instead. I had planned to do 30 minutes, but I was so tired, I barely made it to 20. Today will be a rest day and possibly tomorrow too because I need to give my body time to recover properly. I feel like I’ve run a marathon!

Anyway, yesterday I met up with my really good friend Emma. I love catching up with her because she’s the ONLY person in the world I can fully spill my guts to. We have so much in common and we’re pretty darn similar in some aspects.

We met at a cafe where we talked for a little bit, and she presented me with an amazing gift! A late birthday present. I was so touched, especially since she got it because she knows I was sick of only receiving money for my birthday.

She got me some muscle soak bath salts, muscle soak bubble bath, a note book and a cute little Winnie The Pooh pen, so that when I go away camping (this weekend), if I think of anything for a blog post that I might forget I can write it in there!

It was perfect, and I loved it so much 🙂 Thank you Emma!!!!

Anyway, from there we went and got Subway, but it was too full to eat in the shop so we wandered around other shops for a while before deciding to buy a brownie at another cafe and eat our subway there. They couldn’t kick us out for that lol.

After more chatting, more shopping and more food, Emma decided to buy a massive photo album that she wanted to fill up, but in order for that to work, she needed photos.

We decided to go down to the heads and spend some time just taking photos of anything and everything.

Here’s some of my favourite shots that I took for the day:

I took well over a hundred photos, but these are just a few of the ones that particularly took my fancy.

Today I plan to SUPER CLEAN my bedroom!!!! That means, clean out all the junk, throw out all the rubbish, through out any crap I don’t need, clean surfaces, move stuff around vacuum the carpet, etc etc etc. Hopefully my room will be sparkling by the end!

Stay tuned for my post later in the day about tattoos and the difference between “artwork” and “trashy”

Have an awesome day 🙂

Hey there, my name's Jenny. I have a huge passion for cooking/baking, writing, yoga and photography. I love nature and my favourite thing to do is spend an entire day outside, breathing in crisp, fresh air. Even better if I have a pen and paper with me. I started out running in March 2009 but sustained an injury in October 2009 which has unfortunately prevented me from running. I've been experimenting with other kinds of exercise to find another one that clicks. Follow me on my journey to maintaining good health + surviving high school and pursuing a career in Journalism.
