Final Day of Term 1!!

I am very, VERY relieved that term one is over. Itโ€™s sort of surreal actuallyโ€ฆ Seems like just yesterday that the term began. Iโ€™ve been so busy that the time has just flown by whilst Iโ€™ve been on Autopilot.. I donโ€™t even really get a holiday because on Sunday Iโ€™m heading to Tauranga to prepare to depart for Waiouru on Monday. On Monday our bus departs at 10am sharp, weโ€™ll arrive in Waiouru at approximately 1pm. From there Iโ€™ll be living like a soldier until Friday ๐Ÿ™‚ I am SOO excited!! Iโ€™m expecting to have a total blast.

Once I get back Iโ€™m working Saturday, Sunday and Monday then on Monday evening after my shift Iโ€™ll head to Hamilton and stay with Dad until Friday (Iโ€™m hoping thatโ€™s ok with you Dad, lol). I have to come back friday because Iโ€™m working Saturday and Sunday ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
Working is exhausting!!! Itโ€™s so time-consuming and it sort of takes you by surprise how it creeps up on youโ€ฆ At least Iโ€™ll be earning lots of money so I can pay back Mum and Mark asap.

Nevertheless, the holidays will probably be just as hectic as the term has been. At least I wonโ€™t have to worry about my exercise lacking since the first week will be spent in the Army! Iโ€™ll be absent from the blog-world while Iโ€™m down there, but I promise to take tons of photos and give a huge recap as soon as I get back.

Anywho, onto more recent events, my class totally ROCKED it at Body Combat tonight! I love the muscle-tone this class is giving me, and I can feel myself getting stronger each week.

I leave every week feeling like Iโ€™ve truly given it everything and itโ€™s an awesome feeling ๐Ÿ™‚ That class is fantastic! I feel like my self-defence skills are seriously improving which is a huge confidence booster.

Anyways, I have been so exhausted lately. Afternoon naps are becoming a regular habit and Iโ€™m not entirely sure why because Iโ€™ve been getting quite adequate amounts of sleep lately. I guess my bodyโ€™s been doing everything it can to catch up on the sleep I lost when I was stressed out over the last month or so.

Iโ€™m going to finish watching Go Girls and then Iโ€™m hitting the sack. BRING ON the extra hours of sleep without homework ๐Ÿ™‚

WELL! Today has been one seriously intense day.ย It was swimming sports with school and then afterwards I had my NZ Army fitness test…

Swimming sports was lots of fun ๐Ÿ™‚ I entered 4 events but only competed in 3 because the 4th event was cancelled due to time constraints ๐Ÿ˜ฆ
I swam in 1 length freestyle, 2 lengths freestyle and 1 length breaststroke. I sucked in the first two, but I didn’t expect any better. I haven’t been for a proper swim in about 3 weeks, HOWEVER- I came first in the 1 length breaststroke ๐Ÿ™‚ That made me very happy. The first time in my history at Trident High School that I came first in anything sports related.

I spent the day with 3 awesome friends and the time just flew by. I was pretty anxious the whole day though in anticipation of what would be to come at 4.30pm…..

I didn’t each much throughout the day. I had a small breakfast which was about 1 and a half eggs, 1/4 of a can of baked beans and 1 slice of toast.

I had to force myself to eat throughout the day at swimming sports. I ate two carrots and a small fruit bar, an apple and a marmite sandwich. When I got home I made sure to drink up (because I hadn’t had much water either) and eat some good, healthy food.

I had some green tea, an orange, a handful of Brazil nuts and a Green Monster containing: 1 banana, 4 small leaves of silverbeet, 1/4 cup of blueberries, 1 cup of skim milk, 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon.
It was a it odd tasting, but I was glad I drank it. That stuff gives you such a huge energy boost!! I’d recommend it more than any energy drink available.

At 4.10pm I headed down to the Army hall. The weather’s been pretty on-off all day. Changing between sunshine and heavy showers the whole time, it was alright during swimming sports coz we were all wet anyways. The weather was looking pretty shite when I got there, but I have no problem exercising in rain so it didn’t phase me.

Out of 30 applicants from our area, EIGHT showed up for the fitness test. I don’t care, gives us more of a chance of being accepted!! Oh, by the way, I was the only girl there.

The fitness test was very much more difficult than I had ever anticipated… But as you know, I thrive on a challenge and a chance to work up a heart rate raising sweat so I stayed positive.

The test included:

  • 2.4K run (in under 10 minutes 30 seconds for guys, 12 minutes 20 seconds for girls)
  • Press-ups (ARMY STYLE!! VERY much more difficult than JENNY style lol. Minimum of 28 for guys, 15 for girls)
  • Curl-ups (minimum of 66 for guys and 50 for girls)

The run was killer… I got to the turnaround point and the Army guy in charge told me I’d need to really work hard on the way back to make it in time… Boy howdy did that light a fire beneath me. I HAULED SERIOUS ASS all through that 1.2 Kilometer! It was painful. I couldn’t breath very well, my throat burned, my stomach burned, my face burned, but I ran as quickly as I could.

When I made it to the finish line, I almost died of happiness when I heard my time was 11:57 ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ ๐Ÿ˜€ It wasn’t as great as it COULD have been, but hell, I DID IT!!! I ran the fastest I have ever run in my life and I’m so proud that I achieved the requirements for the run ๐Ÿ˜€

Next up was press ups. Those sucked… I felt terrible because I was only able to do 20 crappy ones. He said he’d count 16 rather than 20 because he goes for quality over quantity and I hadn’t done too well… Something to work on for the future I guess. I’m glad I achieved the minimum though ๐Ÿ™‚

Finally, there were the Curl Ups. He told us the minimum requirements, then he said that when you’re doing them, girls can stop when they reach 118 and guys can stop when they reach (something like) 130. I had never done that particular style of ab work before, but I was so glad that I’ve spent months and months working on my abs because I knew reaching 50 would be a breeze.

We were paired off and worked with our partner to count how many they did and to make sure they were maintaining form and doing them correctly.
When it was my turn, I just went for it. I gave it everything and focused on my breathing and making sure to use my abs. Well… this went far better than I could ever have anticipated because I did the full 118!!! I could’ve kept going but my neck started to hurt :/

I beat all the guys and after that had mad respect from them. It had started raining pretty heavily by then. The guy in charge took us all aside individually and we had a sort of interview. Then he spoke to us all as a group and told us that he’d get back to each of us within the next coming week. He told us we’ll receive one of three letters; saying either congratulations you’ve got a spot, we’re keeping you as a reserve or sorry, not this year.

Apparently there have been 80 applicants for this trip and there are 15 spots available… Pretty intense. I’m keeping my fingers crossed, hoping one of those 15 spots are mine.

If not, well now that I know what to expect I’ll just work 10 times harder and come back and whip some serious booty next year ๐Ÿ™‚

Anyway, I’m exhausted now, it’s been a loonngg and busy day and I’ve got heaps of homework to do before bed ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

To all the Trident Students, hope you all had an awesome time at Swimming Sports ๐Ÿ™‚

Night all!

A whole new world of pain.

Man, I woke up yesterday in so much pain… And of course again this morning. All thanks to that insane strength/weight workout I did with the trainer at the gym the other day.

Literally, my ENTIRE body hurts. Even my abs lol, that’s funny because I didn’t even do ab-specific workouts.

It’s highly difficult to even walk properly. My thighs and butt hurt so bad, I went to the gym yesterday to see the trainer and get my cardio training plan, I had planned to do some kind of workout, but I got there, walked on the treadmill for 2 minutes and decided I was in too much pain to carry on.

HOWEVER, It doesn’t really matter that I skipped the gym yesterday because I did touch training in P.E and that was relatively full-on (also ridiculously painful). Today I did P.E again, I’m quite surprised at how well my knees are handling all the running involved, (I haven’t been to a physio appointment in 2 weeks though :S It’s not my fault though because they work dumb hours. The physio don’t work on weekends and they only work mornings during weekdays, in which I’m at school! That’s so average, I may have to change Physio.) we did a circuit course today, we only went for about 15 minutes, but it was alright.

Also I played Squash in Electives today for the first time in around about a year. The last time I played it was with Emma when I was at my fattest and most unfit. I discovered that I seem to have LOST any skill I may have had. I’m absolutely terrible at the game lol, but hey, I guess everyone has to start somewhere. Besides, I’ll most likely be moved into a production elective anyway.

This one was short but sweet! Still haven’t gotten around to taking any photos ๐Ÿ˜ฆ I’ll have some soon hopefully. I just don’t want to bring my camera to school for fear of having it stolen. And besides, don’t really want pictures of me at school on the blog anyway :/

I’m cooking dinner tonight, so if it’s something interesting I shall photograph the process to see how I go. Regular blog readers will know how awful I am at cooking. The other night I attempted low-fat Quiche. You couldn’t even really call it “Quiche”, it was more like Onion with a side of Quiche if you get what I mean lol.

Have a great night!

P.S- I’ve been listening to the Glee soundtrack like mad. These two are my favourites ๐Ÿ™‚

BIG NEWS! + The importance of stretching

WOW! It has been an insanely busy past few days. Working Sunday’s is really making me appreciate full weekends lol.

School is already getting busy which I’m happy about. I can tell it’s going to be a really hectic year…

I have some really exciting news!!! Secondary schools around New Zealand have been offered the opportunity to go on a NZ Army Careers Experience trip.
I’m not sure if any of you know, but my other option aside from Massey University would be to join the NZ Army and get my Personal Training qualifications through that.
It would be an excellent choice because I would gain so much knowledge, I’d be at the peak of my fitness, I’d get PAID to be there and have all other expenses paid for me, I’d be under strict discipline (which I actually enjoy), and I’d always have a job there in the Army if I wanted it. Also, If I went on to study something outside of the Army at University later on, they pay my uni fees! SWEET DEAL!

On February 25th they are holding the fitness test to see whether I’m fit enough to qualify for the trip (I’m pretty confident I’ll pass, I had a test today which I’ll talk more about later in this post), it consists of a 2.4k run, press-ups and sit-ups. I’m not sure how many, but I’m keen to take the challenge. I can push myself to do amazing things when I want to.

I handed in my completed form to the careers advisor today and now I simply wait to see what will happen next ๐Ÿ™‚

Today I had my “Fame” audition!! I Shall now reveal what song I sang….

I know right, anyone who knows me will be absolutely blown away by this lol. But hey, what can I say? She’s got a good voice! haha.

Moving on- Today I had my fitness assessment at the gym. I decided to get a training plan put together for me so I know what I’m actually doing and don’t injure myself with any of the strength moves…
IT WAS SO INTENSE! The trainer was awesome ๐Ÿ˜€ He was a real cool guy and we got along famously. I pushed my muscles harder than they’ve ever been pushed before, and boy HOWDY am I now feeling it!

I feel like jelly all over. Moving anywhere takes an enormous amount of effort.

I learnt something awesome too! It made my entire WEEK I swear haha! Part of the evaluation/assessment is to bike solidly for 10 minutes at varying levels of difficulty, staying between the speeds of 57-61 (which is a lot harder than it sounds) and they machine measures your heart rate. I found out that my cardio levels are pretty much excellent ๐Ÿ˜€ The trainer told me that he was very impressed and that they were pretty much the best you can get. I was SO happy to know I hadn’t lost my cardiovascular fitness and I was keep in great shape.

At the end, another of the trainers helped teach me this ridiculously painful stretch to stretch my Iliotibial Band (the muscle in your outer quad which is what is causing my knee pain, mine is too tight and doesn’t get stretch properly or often enough). It was so sore, I was yelling in pain most of the time (the guys found this absolutely hilarious lol), but I seriously felt so much better afterwards.

I must remind you all that stretching is SO SO IMPORTANT!! Never skip stretching just because it’s “boring” or “painful” or you “can’t be bothered”. Stretching is an excellent way to help your body recover from physical activity and help prevent injury. It’s tedious and usually painful at the time, but you come out so much better off. I’ve never finished a stretch feeling worse, I always leave feeling loosened up and more relaxed.

To get in a decent stretch, it usually takes around 15-20 minutes. Well for me it does anyway, because I tend to work my entire body during a workout and so I like to stretch as best I can. Each stretch should be held for 15 to 20 seconds, any less than that and it won’t have any effect. It takes the muscle that length of time to actually respond to the stretch.

Here are just a few of the stretches that you can do after a workout:

Honestly, if you skip stretching your muscles will get so tense and so tight, it will feel horrible, painful and can cause injury. Releasing those muscles is such a painful process (by process of deep-tissue massage… NOT FUN) that after you’ve gone through it, you wonder why you didn’t just bother to stretch at the time.

One of the main factors of my knee injuries is because I never used to stretch properly. My Iliotibial band and hamstrings got so tight that now they’re pulling my knees out. Every physio session is spent enduring a 40 minute deep-tissue massage which is so ridiculously painful it’s hard to hold a conversation, and acupuncture, which despite what you may have heard, HURTS!!!

Anyway, I hope that helped you understand how important stretching is… in other news!

Last night I had the biggest workout at the gym. I wanted to imagine I was in Triathlon conditions, so I biked on the Stationary bike for 30 minutes, RAN for 15 minutes (happily without pain!), did a few press-ups as per Army preparation, then swam for 30 minutes.

It was one HEARTY workout and the swim felt great to be honest. I’m stuffed today though!

I participated in P.E today and did the most running that I’ve ever done in the last 2-3 months since my injury.

I was taking it easy and jogging, I wore my running shoes and it really helped that we were on the grass because there was less impact. I was doing interval running for about 40 minutes before… the most unbelievable, unfortunate thing happened…

MY LEFT HIP GOT SORE. As in, the way my RIGHT hip was :/ I’m so annoyed at myself… when I was rehabilitating, I concentrating solely on strengthening my right side because I’d never had problems with my left side, now my left hip is sore and I’m back to square one ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

Time to haul ass and strengthen those glutes ASAP!

I stopped running and sat out for the rest of the session. I did some hip stretches which gave instant relief but now my hip is hurting again :/ I’ve been stretching it a lot and it’s really helping, but I’ll just need to rest it for a couple of days and then get straight into working those glutes to fix it the way I did my right.

Anyway, I’m absolutely stuffed, my muscles are like Jelly and the season premier of Greys Anatomy is on in 25 minutes ๐Ÿ˜€ I’m so excited! Last nights repeat of the previous season finale was so sad it made me cry. It also made me want to ring up all my loved ones and tell them just how much I love them and they mean to me. I can’t wait to see tonight’s episode ๐Ÿ™‚

Have an excellent night!

p.s- I’m sorry I haven’t been posting pictures lately. I’ve been so crazy busy that I haven’t really had the chance. I’ll try and get you guys visually up to date asap ๐Ÿ™‚ There are BIG things happening this weekend which I shall be snapping up.

Upcoming Challenges.

Hey guys!

School was great today ๐Ÿ™‚ Just so you know. I’m starting to feel even more positive about it, and the fact that the production auditions start on Monday makes things even more exciting ๐Ÿ˜€

My audition is on Monday and I can’t wait!!!! I’ve prepared my song, but I won’t tell you what it is until after I’ve sung it ๐Ÿ˜‰ For those of you who don’t know, I think you’ll get a bit of a shock haha.

Now, the purpose of this blog post is so I can fill you guys in on the upcoming sporting challenges that lie ahead for little old me.

Upcoming Challenges for 2010.

I’m sooo excited!! One of my New Years Resolutions and Bucket List choices were to complete a triathlon, and even though this one is tiny, it sounds perfect for me for where I am in my exercise right now.

The race consists of a 300 meter swim, 10k bike ride and 2.5k run or walk. I know, it’s tiny! But that’s why I’m attracted to it. As my readers know, I’m recovering from a serious knee/hip injury which has caused me to take a two month running Hiatus and do nothing but swim or use the Elliptical.

I’ve been seeing regular physio therapy to help recover and my rehabilitation is coming along nicely ๐Ÿ™‚ My knees are very slowly beginning to ease up and my hip is perfect.

I’m still not back into running, but I’m starting to test the grounds a little bit by running here and there. Initially when I got my injury, I couldn’t cycle either because that aggravated my knees.

After a decent rest, I’m able to cycle a lot further and of a higher intensity. I’ve become quite a confident swimmer also, so to me, this triathlon sounds perfect for me. If the run is too hard on me, I’ll simply slow to a walk or a jog which will be fine because the race isn’t about winning.

I’ve got a decent bike.

And my running shoes ๐Ÿ˜€

So I think I’m pretty much prepared in terms of gear. I’m a little nervous to start running again, I don’t want to aggravate my knees and worsen the injury.

I’m being very cautious about running, I’ve tested it a little bit and I find that I can go for 5-10 minutes with minimal pain, but after that it gets more challenging. I’m determined to complete that triathlon though, and I shall do it even if I have to walk the final stretch.

  • Secondly, I’m going to participate in school Swimming Sports for the firstย time since year nine ๐Ÿ˜›

I think I’ll enter as many Breaststroke events as I can and maybe a couple of lengths of freestyle. I’m still not very good at freestyle and I get tired quickly, so I usually can’t go for any longer than 3-4 lengths without stopping for a break.

  • Thirdly, Athletics Day at school.

I should point out that since I’m in P.E Elite, these school events are compulsory anyway, but I’m listing them here because for the first time, I’ll be willingly entering them with enthusiasm.

I want to enter as many events as possible on Athletics day, apart from sprints, for obvious reasons…

It sounds like a ton of fun with some great prizes, and I’m always keen to get a new accomplishment under my belt ๐Ÿ™‚

  • School X-Country.

This is still kinda up in the air atm. I’m not 100% sure if I’ll be ready to run by then, I’m just gonna take it slow and play it by ear.

That’s all I know of for this year in terms of fitness events. I’m sure there will be more coming! And I can’t wait to let you know about them ๐Ÿ˜€

I’m so excited for this year and can’t wait to see how things pan out.

Have a great night and enjoy your weekend!

That’s all I know of so far for this year.

Back to school!

I did a little video blog to help get you guys up to speed as quickly as possible.

I have to say, since I filmed this video blog (sorry about the bad sound quality, the microphone/speaker was muffled the whole time) 2 hours ago, I’ve had kind of a revelation.

Two of my friends opened their hearts and listened to me explain why school upsets me so much, and then they told me what they thought.

They were both so nice and gave me their opinions in such a way that it really made a difference. I need to confront my insecurities and stop worrying about fitting in. Also, we’re doing the production “Fame” this year and it’s kicking off straight away, so that’s something awesome to look forward to ๐Ÿ™‚

I’m going to start concentrating on all the amazing opportunities that have been offered to me this year, and to try to do the best I can academically and in other areas. I’m starting to get excited about this year because there are so many possibilities ๐Ÿ™‚ Also, I’ll never ever get free education again, so I might as well ENJOY it while I can.

The first 3 years of High School sucked and were a horrible experience for me, so why not make this year different?

I’m now determined to enjoy this year and, as Mr Tootell would say, make this my best year yet.

It sounds so lame, but I know I can do it.
