My first race EVER, 10k recap!

Well today was a really really exciting day for me, because…. I took part in my FIRST EVER RACE!
It was also the BEST run I’ve ever had in my life and I was so happy and satisfied with my efforts at the end πŸ™‚

But let’s go back to the beginning…

I was really nervous when I woke up this morning at 7, but I just tried to mentally relax, I made a yum breakfast of Egg in the hole and toast with peanut butter and sliced strawberries. Was gooood.

We left at 8.30am and arrived about 15 minutes later. We registered ourselves and then the dog and then we waited around for a bit.

It was all new and exciting to me since I’ve never raced before. I stood around taking lots of photos πŸ™‚

Running conditions were absolutely PERRRFECT today. It wasn’t too hot and wasn’t too cold. It was a little bit cloudy which was good because it meant we didn’t have the sun beating down on us during our runs.

Last night I decided to run the 10k instead of the 5k as I had originally planned. I decided that I would because I know I’m capable, I’ve done it plenty of times before, 5k is too easy and I might as well make the most of the beautiful weather and awesome opportunity to race!

The race was along the beach, and I actually really enjoyed it. Though the scenery was mostly the same from 3k’s onwards, I found it really relaxing and I felt like I could really concentrate and focus.

Here’s me just before the race began.

It was sooo crowded at the start. People were backed up for ages. I kept thinking to myself “God, you’re planning to run a marathon in a year, imagine this amount of people times 100… damn…”

I was able to break the race up into separate distances which really helped time tick by and kept me motivated. Because the race was broken up into 3k, 5k and 10k, there were the 3 and 5k marks to turn around and go back to finish, and each time I reached one of these, I felt good knowing I only had X amount of K’s left.

They had a water station during this race which was AMAZING. Seriously, I never run with water, so being able to grab a cup and chug it back made such a huge difference. Truly. I have totally been underestimating the importance of staying hydrated whilst running. I’m not going to start thinking of ways I can carry water with me efficiently to help me go further and faster.

Mum caught a snap of me coming past after the 3k mark:

I had a great playlist going too. Spring and Summer are the seasons for Rock N’ Roll for me. It’s when I become truly reconnected with my Guns N’ Roses, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Slash’s Snakepit etc. So lately I’ve been running with what I’ve named my “Rock N Run” playlist. I had that blaring the whole way and it really helped me stay motivated. It also helped take my mind off the distance.

I felt great all throughout this run. No hip pain. No leg pain. I was well-hydrated and properly fueled. It was just a bloody decent run.

My feet got so wet though. Each time I had to run through a small body of water, my shoes would totally fill up and it would feel like I had weights attached to my ankles… damn.

I was so happy to reach the 10k turn point. It was easy from there. I totally picked up the pace and thrived on passing others and knowing I’d smashed my PR (personal record). I knocked a crazy FIFTEEN MINUTES off my usual PR!!! I finished in about 1hr, 5mins. I couldn’t believe it!!

I was about a kilometer from the finish line, and there was Mum with the camera πŸ™‚

CIMG1833

Once I crossed the finish line, the volunteers handed me a cup of water and a huge banana, then I plonked myself on the ground in relief and stretched as best I could. I was exhausted because not only had I run faster with that distance than I ever have before, but it was on SAND. Sand sucks to run on when it’s soft. Thankfully, most of the way it was hard, but in the last little stretch it was soft which made it very difficult.

After stretching, I met up with Mum, Mark, Sam and the dog and we stuck around for the prizegiving.

Taking some nice lil’ photographs while we waited. We were waiting for two hours!

CIMG1835

I love this one because the dog looks like he’s smiling πŸ˜€ Looks like he’s in absolute heaven.

CIMG1842

As they drew the names for the spot prizes, which were actually really really good prizes, we grew more and more doubtful that we’d win anything. Then it got to the last prize, and the BIGGEST. It was a tent donated by Whakatane Outdoors that fits 7 people, the value of $750, they read out the name and who should win it? None other than OUR family! πŸ˜€ We were all happy campers, I’ll tell you that (lol, pun not intended).

It was an impressive thing too!

Here’s a photo when they were halfway through dismantling it for us to take home. I thought to take a picture just a little too late.

CIMG1844

We headed on home, making a stop at Rebel Sport first so I could buy some sole inserts for my running shoes for better arch support, some running socks and a couple of other things Mum wanted. I saw a running skirt and almost went mental! I’ve read all about them on blogs and I want one so bad. I was really happy to see that Rebel Stock them πŸ™‚

They’re also hiring for Xmas at the moment, so I’m going to fix up my CV and apply πŸ™‚ Sounds like the most perfect part-time job for me.

Anyway, that’s all for now lovelies. Hope you enjoyed reading about my kick ass day!

I’ll leave you with some photos of beautiful Ohope just before we left the race site.

School has officially consumed my life.

Yes, as the title states, my life has been taken over by school and studying. After seeing how badly I did on my math and science exams, I am HAULING ASS to do whatever I can to improve those marks. Also in english, I almost got excellence and I know exactly what I need to work on to be able to get there.

I’ve set myself specific targets to study and aim for. I know I can get there, and that’s why I’m putting in the hard yards.

I’ve started getting up half an hour earlier at 6.20 am so I have time to study in the morning, and I’ve given up my lunchtimes for lunchtime math tutorials and soon to be science tutorials if I can fit them in. I’m going to start staying behind for an hour or so after school for Maths as well, plus an hour of study once I get home.

I have never ever been so committed and motivated to achieving well in any kind of exam. I’m proud of myself because I know that if I keep this up, I WILL achieve and I WILL pass those exams with merit or hopefully higher. It’s all about how much you’re willing to put in. As the saying goes: You get out what you put in.

I’ve almost passed level one anyway. I was a little offended today in deans assembly at school when they growled us for only 12 out of the 250 odd students having already gained level one. You need 80 credits to get level one and I have 56, BUT, I have only been offered 60 so even if I had passed everything, I wouldn’t have level one yet!

I was a bit irked for being told off for something I have no control over.

Anyway, my life outside of school?

Running has taken a bit of a break for now… I’m taking a rest day in between runs because my hip isn’t 100% better yet. I think it’s really helping. I’m also doing lots of stretches as the doctor suggested and I’m only doing very slow 5k runs.

I pushed the boundaries today though and decided to do a very intense 35 minute interval training workout.

I had 10 songs on my ipod playlist, the first and last are about 5 minutes long and the first one is for a warm up, the last for a warm down. My warm ups and warm downs are just a slow jog for the duration for the song.

For the rest of the 8 songs, I did something different for each one. Switching between sprints, strength training (lunges and squats whilst holding weights), skipping with a skipping rope, knee-to-chest skipping and jogging.

I love this kind of workout because it’s fun and interesting and makes time go by SO much quicker which is good. Also it targets multiple muscle groups and has a variety of demands which is really good if you want to see quick results and an increase in fitness.

I feel good now, my hips not too bad. I stretched it really well after. My calf muscles are a bit stiff from the skipping rope, but it was a sweet workout and I’ll probably do it again on Monday.

I have a race on Sunday! As mentioned in previous posts. And that’s if you can count a fun run/walk a race lol. Oh well, i’m going just to have fun and get a good workout. Also so I’ll be running with OTHER PEOPLE for once! I always run by myself and it gets lonely after a while.

I’d love to meet people with common interest.

Interval training was a particularly good choice today because lately I have found that with long runs, my legs have been getting extremely sore and tired about 3k’s in, which is NOT good. I’m not sure why but it’s freaking me out. A little interval training is good to strengthen my legs and increase fitness which will hopefully help stop that problem.

If you have any suggestions on that, please leave a comment πŸ™‚

I did something today that I have forgotten to do before all my last few runs…. I put on sunblock!!!! πŸ˜€ Yes that’s right, I slathered my arms, face and chest with SPF 45 sunblock.

I was urged to after seeing how quickly I’m tanning up. I never usually tan this early into the season, but baby I am BROWN! I realized that given how often and how long I’m exposed to the sun, I really need to start being more careful with skin care. So from now on, sunblock it is!

I was really grateful too because the sun was beating down on me so hard for the full 35 minutes and for once, I didn’t have to worry and kick myself for not wearing sunblock πŸ™‚ I felt safe and protected.

Anyway, that’s pretty much what’s up in my life as of right now. I have more to say but I’ll post it all in separate posts so they’re not so long.

Have a fabulous and beautiful, sunny spring evening!

Awesome workout songs! :)

I ran the craziest track today. I really enjoyed it though (despite the massive amount of physical pain I was in towards the end). I’ve been looking forward to a really long, intense run for ages. I haven’t really run a big distance since my last 10k, and now that I’m training for the Taupo half-marathon AND as I’ve newly decided, the 2010 Adidas Auckland MARATHON, I gotta get my booty into gear and pound the pavement!

I ran up the Bird Walk from my house, back down the hill and then a few extra K’s after that. I’m sorry, it’s kinda slack but I don’t know the full distance. What I CAN tell you is the the bird walk is a trail track which consists of LOTS of extremely steep stairs and hills which is great because I don’t usually do hill training. Well, now I do!

It took an hour all up, and BOY HOWDY, I was in a lot of pain towards the end. Took a lot of mind and will-power not to bail and start walking. But I didn’t πŸ™‚ I’m glad I finished. I burnt around 3000 Kilojoules which is HEAPS, and I still haven’t refueled, so I’m quite a bit hungry… ANNNYY keen for a subway sandwich??? lol

So I had my first “mock” exam today. It was Science, it started at 8.40 and there were three papers, one on Chem, one on Bio and one on Physics. The whole exam runs for three hours, but I was done after about an hour and 20 minutes. I totally flunked Physics, but that was because there was stuff in it that I hadn’t learnt. That really pisses me off when they make us sit tests we can’t answer properly because we haven’t even learnt the content!

I was ALLL good with Chemistry. I answered every question in the booklet apart from one. Though afterwards when I looked through my science book I realized I’d made a few errors which was frustrating.

Biology wasn’t as awful as I’d thought. I pretty much winged it and wrote like I actually knew what I was talking about. There was one question though that I just had absolutely no idea. So that one went unanswered lol.

Tomorrow I have my maths exam and I’m feeling ok about it… another exam down I guess.
I’m studying for it tonight, hopefully with my all new study partner. But we’ll have to wait and see what his plans are.

Now as the title suggests, I felt like writing a blog about my favourite songs to move my booty to! For a chick who thrives on 80s rock n’ roll, this entire list basically consists of POP haha. It’s ok though, I need those powerful and upbeat songs to help keep me going.

My Favourite Workout Songs:

1. 3- Britney Spears. (As suggested to me by Caitlin from Healthy Tipping Point and Angela from Oh She Glows. Thanks guys! I love it :D)
2. Bombs Over Baghdad- Outkast
3. Everything- The Veronicas
4. U + Ur Hand- Pink
5. The Potential Break-Up Song- Aly & Aj
6. Paper Gangsta- Lady GaGa
7. Dynamite- Christina Aguilera
8. Untouched- The Veronicas
9. Don’t Stop Me Now- Queen
10. Beat It- Michael Jackson
11. All I Ever Wanted- Basshunter
12. Bad Boy- Cascada
13. Tony The Beat- The Sounds

Those are my favourite workout songs, what are yours? πŸ™‚

AMAZING day :)

Ok, so I’ve pretty much had an AWESOME day. It couldn’t have started and finished better. The only downer was the weather 😦 It’s pretty much been pouring on and off all day, which is unfortunate since we walked everywhere today.

But anyway, back to the beginning…

My day started fantastic with a wonderful run this AM. I broke my PR which left me feeling elated! (and sore! lol). I was so happy, and I had a great shower once I got back, a nice stretch and a yummy lunch of Granola and yoghurt. I was nicely refueled thanks to Powerade Isotonic, which really helped me feel energetic and lively.

Oh, and earlier this morning I forgot to mention my totally KICK ASS work out playlist!
I had put it together last night, and seriously? It was so good. I made sure it had lots of really powerful songs to keep me going and inspire me.

the songs I had were these:
1. All I Ever Wanted- Basshunter
2. Don’t Phunk With My Heart- Black Eyed Peas
3. Bombs Over Baghdad- Outkast
4. Don’t Stop Me Now- Queen (personal favourite)
5. I Gotta Feeling- Black Eyed Peas
6. My Humps- Black Eyed Peas
7. F.I.N.E- Aerosmith
8. Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)- Beyonce

My favourites were definitely “Bombs Over Baghdad” by Outkast and “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen. They gave me such a kick! I felt so inspired to run as fast as I could to prove to myself that I could do it. Just goes to show how influential my Ipod is on me πŸ™‚

Anyway, once all that was done I got a text from Robert saying he was free today after all and he and Emma (walker) were just chillaxin’ and I was free to join them πŸ™‚ So he phoned me and we organised to meet at Ground Zero in town. I got my ass into gear and boosted as fast as I could (I was walking which was slightly painful due to stiff muscles from the run, but the fast walk was actually helpful to loosen me up a bit). I got there about 20 minutes later and ordered a “Health Smoothie” which was Mixed berries with Bee Pollen and a shot of Vanilla protein shake. I was pretty average to be honest. I had high expectations and this just didn’t cut it I’m afraid.

Our time there was great though, we spent two hours sitting on the couches and talking. I love that I can talk about literally ANYTHING to Emma and Robert. I feel so comfortable and relaxed with them, it’s such a great feeling. After two hours there (and NO waitresses clearing away our dishes, thanks guys! awesome customer service!), we decided we were actually hungry so we walked to the Sushi Bar, I ordered three pieces, I got Teriyaki Tofu, Inari and just a regular Sushi Roll. God it was good. I LOVE sushi, truly! Emma ordered a huge plate for her and Robert and then got some free Green Tea for me and her which looked like it had brown rice floating in the top…

We spent about another half hour chatting there and then decided we were going to check out Hair Dye for Emma in the Warehouse which was directly next door to the sushi shop. After that we went to Robert’s Doctor Appointment and Emma and I roamed Kope for a bit. Then we all headed back to her place where we sat and discussed our plans for the rest of the afternoon. The original plan was to go to the hot pools, but they were both sick and didn’t wanna go and have the scody water make them sicker, so instead we got a ride back in to town and went to a restaurant called Roquette and ordered “Orgasm Chips”, which are actually called French fries with Aioli sauce lol. Robert and Emma nicknamed them orgasm chips because they’re so damn good! Very salty, but oh well. Once again we stayed for about an hour and talked. After there we went on hunt for a cafe that was still open to get some coffee and tea, but nothing was open 😦 Instead we opted for the Supermarket to buy a massive block of chocolate. I had about one row which is around 10-15 squares.

I really don’t worry about Kilojoule counting because my exercise basically erases any extra food I eat.

After that we walked back to Robert’s house where we sat and talked for ANOTHER half hour, eating more chocolate (I didn’t have anymore). Then we decided to go watch some FUNNY ASS SHIT on Youtube πŸ˜€ Here are just a few of the HILARIOUS videos we watched:

GOD It’s brilliant πŸ˜€
Especially the Family Guy one lol. I laughed for ages at that.

So yeah, after our video watching, Emma’s dad came and picked us up and took me home. I had the nicest toasted sandwich for dinner which had cheese, salami, spaghetti and tomato,Β and now here I am! πŸ™‚

I have had a rather splendid day. Have a fantastic night everybody and I’ll be back here tomorrow with an update on my 10k I have planned.Β Pray for good weather!!!

Do you like to run in the rain? Or do you prefer sunshine and clear skies? πŸ™‚

Who’s feelin’ naughty?

I like your pants around your feet, I like the dirt that’s on your knees, I like the way you still say ‘please’ when you’re looking up at me, you’re like my favourite damn disease.
